How Much Electricity Does a Red Light Panel Use? Cost Guide

Electricity cost is rarely the biggest line item in a red-light panel purchase, but it is easy to estimate before checkout. You need four inputs: power draw, session length, weekly frequency, and your local electricity rate.

The simple electricity-cost formula

Use kilowatt-hours (kWh), the unit shown on most residential electricity bills:

Monthly kWh = watts ÷ 1,000 × session hours × sessions per week × 4.33
Monthly cost = monthly kWh × local rate per kWh

The 4.33 factor converts an average week into an average month. Treat the result as an estimate, because actual use varies by model, power setting, session length, frequency, and measured draw.

Three illustrative examples

The examples below use an electricity rate of $0.20 per kWh. They are calculation examples, not product recommendations or measurements from a specific panel.

Replace every input with your own panel and utility numbers. If your bill uses time-of-use pricing, calculate with the rate that applies when you expect to run the panel.

Find the right wattage number

A product page can use “wattage” in several ways. Before calculating, determine whether the number means:

  • Rated or maximum input power.
  • Typical measured power draw.
  • LED count multiplied by an individual diode rating.
  • Power-supply capacity rather than routine consumption.
  • Draw at one brightness or mode setting.

These figures are not automatically interchangeable. Look for input power on the product label, manual, technical sheet, or power supply. If the seller does not explain the number, ask for the typical wall draw at the setting you expect to use.

Measure actual draw when precision matters

A suitable plug-in electricity meter can show watts while the panel is running and accumulated kWh over several sessions. Follow the meter and panel instructions, confirm the meter is rated for the device, and do not exceed its electrical limits.

A short measurement log can include:

  1. Panel mode or intensity setting.
  2. Watts shown after startup settles.
  3. Session duration.
  4. kWh accumulated across several sessions.
  5. The electricity rate from your current bill.

Measured use is more useful than estimating from LED count alone.

Compare operating cost with total ownership cost

Electricity is only one part of the purchase. Put it next to:

  • Panel price and any required stand or mount.
  • Shipping and possible return-shipping cost.
  • Warranty coverage and exclusions.
  • Replacement power supplies, controllers, or other accessories.
  • Room fit, outlet access, cord routing, and storage.

A lower-wattage panel is not automatically the better buy. A higher-wattage panel is not automatically more suitable. Compare power draw after deciding what size, coverage, and setup fit your home.
